Originating in Canada during the early 19th century, ice hockey was first played in the US in the 1890s and became an Olympic sport by 1920. Below are the three most recent men's gold medal winners in the sport:

1. Olympic Athletes from Russia (Pyeongchang 2018) - The 2018 Games in Pyeongchang, South Korea marked the first Winter Olympics in which National Hockey League players didn't participate since 1998. Moreover, Russia was banned from the Games for a doping scandal, but its athletes were still permitted to play under the five-ring Olympic flag and the name "Olympic Athletes from Russia." Its hockey team won gold by defeating Germany in the finals.

2. Canada (Sochi 2014) - Canada won its second consecutive gold medal at the 2014 Games in Sochi by defeating Sweden 3-0 in the final. Sidney Crosby, Jonathan Toews, and Chris Kunitz scored for Canada, while Carey Price recorded a 24-save shutout. Finland won the bronze medal.

3. Canada (Vancouver 2010) - Canada defeated the US in the final to win gold in the 2010 Games in Vancouver and, in doing so, became the first host nation to win gold since the US at the Lake Placid Games in 1980.
